{"id":14599,"date":"2020-06-19T23:54:19","date_gmt":"2020-06-20T06:54:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theasoe.com\/blog\/?p=14599"},"modified":"2020-06-19T23:54:19","modified_gmt":"2020-06-20T06:54:19","slug":"margaret-river-offshore-drilling-lease-approved-according-to-the-herald-and-herald-sun","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasoe.com\/blog\/?p=14599","title":{"rendered":"Margaret river offshore drilling lease approved, according to The Herald and Herald Sun"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Margaret river offshore drilling lease approved, according to The Herald and Herald Sun<\/p>\n<p>Victoria Coast District Council has approved the exploration of Victoria&#8217;s most remote remote marine zone.<\/p>\n<p>The district councillor is understood to have authorised exploration after the council received feedback about the proposed project last week.<\/p>\n<p>The plan, based on the concept of &#8216;bounty&#8217; land \u2013 areas that attract oil and gas to be developed \u2013 was a &#8216;no go&#8217; before the council was contacted.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;This is a bold new direction for the Victorian Coast District and its residents&#8217; lives, which will open up a new era for regional and coastal industries as we develop a new wave of exploration and production opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It will provide a longterm benefit for our regional economy and jobs through increased supply and quality for those industries in this increasingly competitive sea.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>The project would require exploration in the heart of the Darling, Gippsland and Parramatta marine areas.<\/p>\n<p>The council has now approved the land use and environmental assessment, which will determine how much land the area would contain.<\/p>\n<p>It will then be decided on the type of land the government would use in the region \u2013 or where it would choose to focus oil and gas reserves.<\/p>\n<p>Drilling to date has involved the work of Chevron and is part of the wider &#8216;Offshore Zone&#8217; policy outlined by the Federal Government after last November&#8217;s federal election defeat.<\/p>\n<p>Victoria&#8217;s remote marine zones will encompass four main sites: the Darling, Gippsland, Parramatta and Cascadia.<\/p>\n<p>The Darling, Gippsland and Parramatta marine areas<\/p>\n<p>The Darling River<\/p>\n<p>The area within about 5km of the Darling is where oil and gas exploration is e<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jarvees.com\/\" title=\"\ubc14\uce74\ub77c\">\ubc14\uce74\ub77c<\/a>xpected to begin, and contains huge oil-bearing oil wells.<\/p>\n<p>But some concerns were raised about the site&#8217;s potential for oil spills and potential for a spill of crude and oil.<\/p>\n<p>It is thought that these oil companies could have an industrial impa<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jarvees.com\/\" title=\"\ubc14\uce74\ub77c\uc0ac\uc774\ud2b8\">\ubc14\uce74\ub77c\uc0ac\uc774\ud2b8<\/a>ct on the area if a spill had taken place.<\/p>\n<p>The Cascadia marine area<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jarvees.com\/\" title=\"\uc6b0\ub9ac\uce74\uc9c0\ub178\">\uc6b0\ub9ac\uce74\uc9c0\ub178<\/a><br \/>\nThe Darling and Cascadia rivers are a great combination for oil and gas exploration.
